Smoke and Fire Curtain Applications
Every deployable curtain application maps to a wall type in IBC Chapter 7 — smoke partition, smoke barrier, fire partition, fire barrier, or fire wall. The wall type on the life safety plan determines the test standard the opening protective must meet: UL 10B 20-minute without hose stream for smoke partitions, UL 10D and UL 1784 for smoke barriers and fire partitions, UL 10B with the ASTM E2226 hose stream for fire barriers and fire walls. The exception is elevator hoistway smoke containment — not a wall type, but hoistway opening protection evaluated to ICC AC 77. Below, all six, with the code driver and matched products for each.
Opening in Smoke Partition
Smoke-only separation — no fire-resistance rating. Non-hose-stream-tested draft and smoke curtains for atria, escalator wells, and floor openings classified as smoke partitions.
Opening in Smoke Barrier Wall
1-hour fire-resistance-rated, smoke-resistant construction. Opening protectives tested to UL 10D and UL 1784 — hose stream not required.
Opening in Fire Partition Wall
1-hour rated: corridors, elevator lobbies, dwelling unit separations. UL 10D and UL 1784 tested; the Hose Stream line covers openings where ASTM E2226 applies.

Opening in Fire Barrier Wall
1–3 hour rated: shafts, exit enclosures, occupancy separations. Hose stream tested per ASTM E2226 with y-axis deployment and retraction.
Opening in Fire Wall
2–4 hour structural separation creating separate buildings. Hose-stream-tested curtains close openings in and between fire walls; moveable fire wall assemblies deploy on the x, y, and z axes per UL 263.
