Elevator Smoke Containment for Residential Towers
Residential towers specify hoistway smoke containment per IBC. The elevator door is fire rated; the gap between door and frame is not — it admits hot gases and drives smoke stack effect through the building. A curtain in front of the opening closes it.

Elevator hoistways
Curtains deploy automatically as directed by the smoke detection and alarm system, or manually when required. Units are sized to the hoistway opening, run in steel side rails, and ship with frames that are field-painted or powder coated to the building’s color standard. The curtain does not interfere with elevator door operation.
If main power, the backup generator, and the fire alarm panel all fail, the curtain still deploys — the fail-safe is gravity.

Inside the residence
A curtain mounted inside a condominium entrance doorway adds 2 hours of protection when residents are trapped on upper floors — smoke seeping under the door is the actual threat, and towels under the door have historically been the only defense.
Deployment is manual or automatic through the home security or fire alarm system. Deployed after escape, the curtain also substantially reduces damage to the contents of the unit.
