Mission critical facilities
Ports, nerve centers, power plants, electrical grids, and data centers have to survive a fire scenario without interrupting operations.
Smoke curtains compartmentalize open areas on demand, separating and retarding the progress of smoke and fire — which is why deployable curtains appear in Continuity of Operations (COOP) facility designs.

Prisons & detention centers
Detention facilities must maintain control of residents throughout an incident, so the fire protection has to follow the facility’s procedures — not the other way around. Curtains deploy automatically from the fire alarm or the security alarm system, retract automatically in a pre-programmed sequence matched to evacuation and security procedures, or retract manually when supervisors need to adapt.
Barriers of bars and chain-link pass smoke freely; ceiling-deployed curtains close large open areas and long spans with a single deployment, in new construction or retrofit.

Historic buildings
Whether it is the renovation of Montpelier or the updating of a historic office building, historic structures often have tiny passages and minimal exit space — the opposite of open architecture.
Curtain technology is often the only viable fire safety upgrade: the headbox consumes little room real estate, retrofits into existing structures, integrates with the existing central fire alarm system, can reduce sprinkler system requirements, and eliminates visible barriers and fire-rated glass. The historic integrity of the building is maintained.
